For those of you who remember my very early dj days when I mostly used to play heavy funk and hip hop, you have probably heard my sets evolve into a more eclectic outlet for anything from jazz to latin to house and disco. To me there is no distinction in music I like, it's all about sound, arrangement, rhythm vs melody, big vs small, mood, emotion... in other words I love it all from the dirty and rough to the sublime and meticulous.

Once I got into house and disco, I began to research the roots of what we consider modern dance music (from "krautrock" to Italo) and the term Balearic was a "subgenre" that I heard a few times. I was pretty ignorant of it, and to be quite honest, I still have a long way to go, but I realized that a lot of the hazy, spaced out new electronic music I was into was being tagged as having a Balearic feel.

I don't normally like labels b/c to me music is subjective and we all have different interpretations of what is "good" and what is "bad"; it's all part of a larger tree in the end. But still, the Balearic influence has been in my sets long before I was even aware of what that word was. Here is a practice set I was working on for an upcoming gig. If you've heard some of my recent mixes, some usual suspects show up (Classixx, Todd Terje).

I can be a vinyl nazi sometimes and I really do prefer to dj with records, but this mix was recorded strictly using Serato.

Ain't Nothing Wrong With My Leg...

I'm just B-Boy limpin'. If you know this lyric, chances are you and I will be good friends. It's no secret I'm obsessed with music. Paul's Boutique is one of my favorite records of all time. Since this was the 20th year anniversary of this hip hop masterpiece, I decided to pull out the records from the crate and dedicate a mix to the genius of that album.

It starts out with a prologue of hip hop tracks prior to 1989 (not definitive by any means, but rather my own interpretation) and then we dive head-first into the album cuts, b-sides and samples that made up the record. If you know the record, you'll get it, if not, you'll probably still enjoy it but you'll miss the context.

This is by no means a definitive sample list (there are many records I didn't include, some b/c I still don't own). The mix was recorded live in one take into Garageband (the dorkiest shit), on two turntables, a mixer, an effects unit, needles, a pre amp, some cables, some cherry coca cola, a pair of headphones, mom's tamales (the goods) and a f@ckload of inspiration.

All vinyl. There are flubs (sugarhill groove), mistakes and miscues which gives it a rough feel (I dig that). I hope you enjoy this mix as much as I enjoyed making it.

Put this on your iPod and get ready to catch wreck and have an instant party. It's a trip, it's got a funky beat and you can bug out to it!

I was inspired to create a new dj mix today. It's the beginning of Spring here in Austin, Texas. Life is great and the songs featured on the mix are some of my personal favorites. "Slow" Mixes

This time around, I wanted to post two mixes that I made just for myself.

The Sleep Mix, is basically sounds and songs that have very little beats, I guess you could call it an ambient mix. I made this to fall asleep to, as the title implies.

It's a short mix (clocking in at just under 30 minutes) with music by Plaid, Flying White Dots, Steve Reich, Panda Bear, Fleetwood Mac and Boards of Canada. It's designed to take you to dreamland.

The Airless Dream mix is one I recorded live just to do something different. It never really went anywhere, but over time, it became one of my favorite mixes to listen to when I just wanted something chill in the background. One thing you may notice is that I used a portion of this mix (the latter part) and incorporated it into the New Year's Day mix (aka You Are All Beautiful).

Here's a mix I did for my friends at buhbomp.com. It's an hour and forty minutes long. I decided to do a "slow build", starting with classics and gradually work the tempo up to deep disco, finishing things off with hazy electronica. Perfect for listening to at anytime.

I found this old mix when I was cleaning out old files. Man, I love when I find old sloppy (just slightly in case you're scared!) dj mixes that I forgot about. I used to record a lot of my old live sets and now that technology has made it so easy to share media, I'm happy to share some of the nuggets from the dusty dj vaults with you. Not sure when this was recorded, my guess is around 2004ish.
