Love Dancing Vol. 2

Love dancing vol 2 by djstarsign

For those of you who remember my very early dj days when I mostly used to play heavy funk and hip hop, you have probably heard my sets evolve into a more eclectic outlet for anything from jazz to latin to house and disco. To me there is no distinction in music I like, it's all about sound, arrangement, rhythm vs melody, big vs small, mood, emotion... in other words I love it all from the dirty and rough to the sublime and meticulous.

Once I got into house and disco, I began to research the roots of what we consider modern dance music (from "krautrock" to Italo) and the term Balearic was a "subgenre" that I heard a few times. I was pretty ignorant of it, and to be quite honest, I still have a long way to go, but I realized that a lot of the hazy, spaced out new electronic music I was into was being tagged as having a Balearic feel.

I don't normally like labels b/c to me music is subjective and we all have different interpretations of what is "good" and what is "bad"; it's all part of a larger tree in the end. But still, the Balearic influence has been in my sets long before I was even aware of what that word was. Here is a practice set I was working on for an upcoming gig. If you've heard some of my recent mixes, some usual suspects show up (Classixx, Todd Terje).

I can be a vinyl nazi sometimes and I really do prefer to dj with records, but this mix was recorded strictly using Serato.

Ain't Nothing Wrong With My Leg...

I'm just B-Boy limpin'. If you know this lyric, chances are you and I will be good friends. It's no secret I'm obsessed with music. Paul's Boutique is one of my favorite records of all time. Since this was the 20th year anniversary of this hip hop masterpiece, I decided to pull out the records from the crate and dedicate a mix to the genius of that album.

It starts out with a prologue of hip hop tracks prior to 1989 (not definitive by any means, but rather my own interpretation) and then we dive head-first into the album cuts, b-sides and samples that made up the record. If you know the record, you'll get it, if not, you'll probably still enjoy it but you'll miss the context.

This is by no means a definitive sample list (there are many records I didn't include, some b/c I still don't own). The mix was recorded live in one take into Garageband (the dorkiest shit), on two turntables, a mixer, an effects unit, needles, a pre amp, some cables, some cherry coca cola, a pair of headphones, mom's tamales (the goods) and a f@ckload of inspiration.

All vinyl. There are flubs (sugarhill groove), mistakes and miscues which gives it a rough feel (I dig that). I hope you enjoy this mix as much as I enjoyed making it.

Put this on your iPod and get ready to catch wreck and have an instant party. It's a trip, it's got a funky beat and you can bug out to it!

Peace!

P.S.
No tracklist, but here some fools whose records are in this piece: Mantronix, T-La Rock, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Original Concept, Kurtis Blow, World Famous Supreme Team, The Meters, Black Oak Arkansas, The Crusaders, Curtis Mayfield, Funky Four Plus One, Isley Brothers, Lovebug Starski, Terminator X, Commodores, Incredible Bongo Band and more.

Vintage Players Session Vol. 02

Vintage Players Sessions (Vol. 02) by djstarsign

I buy a lot of vinyl. I can't play some of it when I dj certain clubs because it doesn't really work on the dance floor (although it used to back in the day). I created VPS (Vintage Players Sessions) as an outlet for songs I love but can't really rock out in public as much as I'd like. The first VPS was structured more like a radio show and less like a mix. This time around I was going to do the same thing, but about 4 songs in, the batteries on my portable recorder died so I had to start over again.

It was then that I decided to scrap the usual VPS style and record a dj set consisting of 4/4 nuggets. I've been raiding dollar bins and used "disco" sections for years and have amassed a nice collection of disco/post-disco/electro-R&B/80's funk/whatchamacallit...

I call this style of music Champagne Disco and Jheri Curl Funk.

1. chanson - don't hold back
2. mother's finest - don't wanna come back
3. jerome prister - say you'll be
4. dexter wansel - it's been cool
5. ritchie family - i'll do my best (for you baby)
6. stone city band - strut your stuff
7. people's choice - you ought to be dancing
8. one way - mr. groove
9. sharon redd - love how you feel
10. haircut 100 - late night shopping
11. starpoint - so delicious
12. indeep - 10 reasons
13. rufus - tonight we love

15. 400 blows - movin'
16. jimmy castor bunch - psych-out
17. pigbag - the big bean
18. annabel lamb - riders on the storm

Vintage Players Sessions (DJ Starsign) - Mix 1 June 09 by djstarsign

Vintage Players Sessions is a mix series of vinyl that I love but can't really play out in a dj setting. This is the first of the series and is essentially a random grab and play selection from my library. Sorry no tracklisting.

Fall Practice Mix 2009

Fall 2009 (a mix for antelopes and beavers) by djstarsign

"Get it up, get it up for LOVE!"

This mix was another one of those happy accidents for me. It was just another practice routine that I happened to be recording. When I listened to the playback, I was very surprised at how good everything flowed since it was an improvised mix that wrote itself as I went along.

Pressure Drop "Summer 2009 Mix"

I originally made this mix as my personal "workout" mix for the bike rides and fitness routines. There was no real rhyme or reason, just songs that I liked. The mix turned out pretty decent so I decided to share it.
